Allergic to mold, dust mites
Many people remain unaware that their allergic reaction to dust mites and certain molds can be controlled successfully without medication. Steam cleaning is one of the best ways.

How do dust mites and molds enter the home?

Dust mites are microscopic arachnids that live in the household dust, itself. They feed on dead hair and skin cells, and can live in temperatures of up to 130 degrees Fahrenheit, thriving in humid warm areas.

Mold normally begins growing due to humidity and warm conditions. Certain molds that can be prevalent in the home are sensitive to temperatures over 160 degrees Fahrenheit. While some molds can be killed with steam, it is important to note that a humid environment must be controlled with a dehumidifier. This ensures that mold does not return after a steam treatment.

How does steam cleaning get rid of dust mites and molds?

Steam cleaning is very effective at reducing or killing dust mites as well as common household molds. The heat from steam is generally close to 212 degrees Fahrenheit!

Getting rid of dust mites is a little bit trickier than getting rid of molds. You should use a dehumidifier in your home as well as a steam cleaner. Bedding is a favorite place for dust mites to live. Strip down all bedding and wash it in hot water and a hot cycle in the dryer. While the bedding is being washed, steam clean all mattresses and pillows thoroughly with your device.

To steam clean flooring, steam woods or laminates, and use a damp mop to pick up any residual dust particles. Dust mites love carpet! Consider replacing it with wood, tile, or laminate flooring.

You should also steam clean any fabric in your home such as drapes, furniture and accent rugs. These are all places for dust mites to hide. You can steam clean fabrics where they are, but always do a spot test in an inconspicuous place.

Dust everything in your home with a damp cloth to prevent it from becoming airborne. Use your steam cleaner once per week and you will notice an improvement in allergy symptoms.

It is very important to wear protective clothing, including a dust mask and gloves when dealing with mold. After dehumidifying your home or the area where the mold is present, allow your steamer to heat up. Thoroughly steam each area, holding the steamer in place long enough to completely kill the mold, repeating the process if needed.

If your steamer does not kill the mold, call a professional service to take care of the problem. Some molds are extremely resilient and very toxic.

When it comes to allergies, a steam cleaner is your best friend. It’s one of the most effective ways to control dust mites and dangerous molds in your home. With regular and proper use, you can greatly reduce your allergy symptoms and show off a cleaner home!
